GUTTER CLEANING IN LANCASTER COUNTY PA

Seasoned homeowners know that water is one of the most important things to watch out for with houses. Whether a house has leaks or issues with drainage or another water-related problem, it can all lead to expensive repairs with the foundation, or wood that can mold or rot.

That’s why clean, functioning gutters are so important: their job is to protect your humble abode from water.

For gutters to work well at protecting your house from water damage, they need to be cleaned regularly and extended far enough away from your home in order to keep water from damaging the foundation.

WHERE TO START

The next time it’s raining, take a walk around your house to see if the water is draining properly, or if there are spots where it may be pooling around the house. Whatever the source of the water is, look for drops or streams coming from gutters behind it.

When gutters are filled with snow or ice, they often pull away from the house, so check for any potential gaps. Finally, examine the bottom of each downspout. The downspouts can come off for all sorts of reason – getting bumped by kids or pets or a lawn mower – and when they do, the water gathers around the foundation of the house. Undetected, that water collecting around the foundation can create tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage. Beneath a downspout there is typically a splash block, which is a wedge made of plastic or concrete that is designed and placed to divert water away from the foundation.

Routinely check that your downspouts are clear and your gutters are clean. Doing so will save you time and money in the long run. Clogged downspouts and gutters can pose numerous problems that are expensive and potentially dangerous or downright disgusting, as sometimes an infestation of bugs or mice can be the result of clogged gutters. Putting in some minimal effort to inspect and routinely have your gutters professionally cleaned will be worth the investment. (If you don’t believe us, ask someone who waited too long to do this.)

WHEN SHOULD I CLEAN MY GUTTERS

Fall is the most common season people associate with the chore of gutter cleaning. Particularly for homeowners who have trees around their home, fall really is an important time to clear gutters of fallen twigs, leaves, and any other debris that may have accumulated. The ideal schedule to shoot for is having your gutters professionally cleaned twice a year: once as fall ends and winter begins (when all of the leaves are off the trees) and again in early spring to prepare for heavy rains. Depending on the location of your property and the amount of foliage, gutter cleaning may be something that needs to happen more frequently. The minimum to plan for is twice yearly.
