The Importance of Working with HAAG Certified Contractors
To give you peace of mind when it comes to hiring a residential roofing contractor, dependability, experience and proven results are significant factors to consider. Whether you are considering hiring a local handyman or a professional siding and roofing contractor, it is important to do your homework on them first. Finding the contractor that is the right fit for you and your home can take time and work. One way to narrow down the field of professional and reputable roofers is by checking the company’s certifications, which come from the manufacturers.

To produce long-lasting and effective results, roofing products need to be installed correctly and the manufacturers use certification programs to validate that roofers are using the right products and installation processes. Some roofing shingle manufacturers require intensive background and credit worthiness checks on their contractors, as well as requiring ongoing training of installers to ensure the roofing installation is being done properly. It is important to find a residential roofing contractor that is trustworthy, cost-effective and certified.
What Does it Mean to be a HAAG Certified Contractor?
In the roofing world, being HAAG certified is a big deal and holds a lot of weight in the industry. To be considered HAAG certified, roofing contractors undergo intensive damage assessment training with comprehensive testing to ensure proficiency in the field. This type of certification indicates that the roofing contractor can effectively and efficiently inspect and assess damage, as well as have a deeper level of credibility for their customers.
There are three different, three-day each, HAAG Certification courses available: residential roofing, commercial roofing and wind damage. To be considered to participate in HAAG trainings, roofing contractors must have extensive experience and references to support their desire to continue their education in a variety of residential roofing, commercial roofing and/or wind damage policies and procedures. Once contractors meet specific pre-requisites, participants will become well-versed in how to determine if a roof should be repaired or replaced.
A variety of roof types are discussed during the intensive courses:
- Composition
- Tile
- Slate
- Wood
- Metal
- Low-slope
- BUR and Mod-Bit
- Single-Ply Roofs
At the completion of the three-day/20-hour trainings, contractors are given a maximum of four hours to complete a 100-question written test to demonstrate their gained knowledge from the rigorous commercial roofing, residential roofing and/or wind damage trainings. Upon passing this test, contractors are given the highly-acclaimed title of HAAG Certified. This certification is good for one year and contractors can renew their certification annually by completing a quiz and paying a fee.
