How to Clean My Gutters Before April Showers

Did you know that your home’s gutter system protects your roof, walls, foundation and landscape?  When sticks, leaves and other forms of debris build up in your gutters, it can lead to sagging gutters, a leaky roof, mold growth, a wet basement and water damage to the exterior and/or interior of your home.  In addition, clogged gutters are like an open invitation to pesky rodents and other pests to make their homes there.

As the saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.”  Let Best Contracting help walk you through the ins and outs of cleaning your gutters before those April showers start falling:

Required Materials:

  • Extendable Ladder – Be sure to place your ladder on a sturdy surface and have another person spotting you at the base of the ladder.
  • Gutter Scoop – A small child’s sandbox shovel, a plastic kitchen spatula or an actual gutter scoop will all do the trick of removing debris from your gutters.
  • Tarp – A large tarp should be used to protect your yard from debris and make clean up a breeze.
  • Garden hose – To easily flush out your cleaned gutters and test for leaks, use your garden hose as a last step.

Appropriate Attire – Cleaning your gutters is a messy job, so protect yourself by wearing long garments, rubber gloves underneath work gloves and sneakers or work boots that will grip well to your ladder.

Timing:

  • Weather Forecast – Allow for a few dry days leading up to your gutter cleaning.  This will let the debris dry out, making the removal much easier.

It is important to thoroughly clean out your gutters, following the above steps, at least twice a year – typically in the fall and spring.  If trees line your home, you may want to clean your gutters every three months to reduce your chances of clogged gutters.  It is a good habit to check your gutters after a bad storm as well.  It is always recommended to stay on top of your gutter maintenance to prevent costly repairs down the line.
